Background music in shops and restaurants increases sales!

Did you know that studies have been carried out which show that background music can increase your turnover. Music makes customers relax, so they stay longer in the store and therefore buy more.
This shows a comprehensive study of the commercial effect of music made by the Swedish analysis agency HUI and Soundtrack Your Brand, who are behind the study.

Music in Restaurants

With an analysis of 1.8 million purchases in 16 restaurants, the study is one of the most comprehensive that has been made around the commercial effect of background music. The sales in the restaurants were investigated and analysed over 20 weeks under the influence of different types of music. The analysis showed a clear increase in sales when music selected to match the brand was played, compared to random music.

The study emphasizes how important the music is for restaurant guests’ experience and shows that the choice of music has a direct impact on sales.

Music in shops and supermarkets etc.

Peter Vuust, who is a professor and researcher in the connection between the brain and music, says that the music should be quiet, calm and without too many breaks. Most people feel it is stressful to be in a supermarket. Children are screaming and we really just want to go home quickly. Therefore, the music must not stress us further.

Music can influence our mind and release good signalling substances such as adrenaline and dopamine in the
brain, which give a feeling of happiness. According to Peter Vuust, we get high from music – in a completely harmless way – and the brain likes that.
Ideally, the music should be heard by the customer, but without attracting the customer’s attention. If the customer does become aware of the music, it must be so anonymous and neutral that the customer can quickly nod in recognition to it and then simply slide back and be “a pleasant colour on the wall”.

Koda/Gramex er to forskellige organisationer, som sikrer betaling til musikkens rettighedshavere for offentlig brug af deres musik. Men det er forskellige rettigheder, der forvaltes af henholdsvis Koda og Gramex.

Koda varetager rettigheder på vegne af komponister, sangskrivere og musikforlag. I Gramex varetages rettigheder på vegne af udøvende kunstnere, der medvirker på indspillet musik, og pladeselskabet/producenten bag udgivelsen.

Har man både skrevet tekst og/eller musik og medvirket på indspilningen, har man ret til betaling fra både Koda og Gramex, når musikken bliver spillet i radioen men man er ikke automatisk medlem af den ene organisation, fordi man er medlem af den anden.
Gramex og Koda samarbejder for at gøre det så nemt som muligt for kunderne at afspille musik. Som for eksempel butik eller cafe skal du derfor kun afregne afgiften et sted, nemlig hos Koda, der herefter formidler at pengene fordeles korrekt videre.

Hvordan måler man hvad der bliver afspillet?

Da man ikke kan måle hvad der afspilles i en butik eller restaurant, er det ikke sådan at de musikere, som bliver afspillet som baggrundsmusik, bliver afregnet direkte for dette. I stedet bruges der en fordelingsnøgle hvor nogle penge går til musikere, og andre til f.eks workshops og administration.

Forskellen på koda og BMI

Et medlem fra Koda kan som reglerne er i dag, ikke få lov til at lægge musik op på vores portal. Hos Koda og deres søsterselskaber i Europa, kan/må man ikke overdrage sin egen musik til andre til kommerciel benyttelse. Er man derimod medlem af det amerikanske søsterforbund BMI, gælder der andre regler. Her må musikeren gerne varetage sine egne rettigheder, så her kan man få sin musik ud at ”arbejde” i hele verden på vores portal. Samtidig bliver musikerne afregnet specifikt for det antal gange deres numre er blevet afspillet, da vi nøjagtigt ved, både hvor og hvornår et musiktrack er afviklet hos os.

Vi har på det sidste set flere danske musikere skifter musikerforbund fra Koda til det amerikanske forbund for at opnå mulighed for, selv at bestemme hvor man vil have afspillet sin musik.

Vi er således et alternativ til Koda og Gramex, og rapporterer direkte til de forbund hvor vi har licens til at afspille musik fra og vi skal derfor ikke rapportere til hverken Koda eller Gramex.

Mange tænker: “Kan man undgå at betale til Koda?”. Som udgangspunkt skal der betales til Koda hvis man afspiller musik hvor der er offentligt adgang. Det vil sige at du gerne må afspille musik på kontoret, køkkenet, lageret eller andre steder hvor der ikke er offentligt adgang.

Som eksempel må lagerpersonalet gerne høre radio hele dagen uden der afregnes til Koda. Det samme gælder i kantine eller køkken hvor det kun er medarbejdere der har adgang.

Når du skal afregne til Koda og Gramex er der forskellige tariffer, som eksempelvis en butik eller en restaurant skal betale. Som udgangspunkt afregnes der en pris pr. kvadratmeter, dvs. store butikker betaler en høj pris mens små butikker betaler en mindre pris.
